Growing Up Across Borders is an international participatory research project. They aim to provide timely new research focusing on various aspects of the experience of young people, in order to contribute research both on youth and on migration/mobility. The research is carried out in a range of countries, such as France, Greece, the UK, Canada and South Africa, to analyze the impacts of different social, legal and political contexts. They emphasize participatory research methods to enhance the participation and self-expression of young refugees and forced migrants. We use a feminist intersectional approach to avoid essentializing young people as “vulnerable” and understand age as interacting with other social categorizations such as gender or race to determine individuals’ risks, vulnerabilities, but also possibilities for agency and strategies of resistance.
In collaboration with the University of Sheffield, S4 Collective participated in the Access Welcome Program (AWP), an initiative that brought together young migrants from Ontario and South Yorkshire to co-create an interactive resource for universities. The project aimed to help post-secondary institutions become more accessible, welcoming, and protective of students with precarious immigration status. By drawing on international research and lived experiences, the collaboration explored what sanctuary could look like in higher education and developed practical resources to support meaningful change.
